Controlling Costs
Freeze Tuition

What is your position on the cost of attending the University of Michigan and how would you propose to make attending more affordable?

I’m running for the University of Michigan Board of Regents to fight the high cost of a Michigan college education. It’s no secret that many Michigan students and families are priced out or have been financially burdened with significant student debt just to attend college. In many cases, the degree received has a very low return on investment (ROI) relative to job earnings prospects.  This is wrong.

Student debt in our country is a national tragedy. Presently there is 1.8 trillion dollars in outstanding student debt and the amount continues to climb. If we can slow the growth of cost to attend U of M, we can begin to address the amount of debt taken out to attend.  I will propose a freeze in tuition, once elected to put U of M on a path to affordability.

Protecting Women's Sports at the University of Michigan

What is your position on biological males participating in women's sports?

I’m running for U of M Regent to protect women’s sports from participation by biological males. It is wrong for biological males to be allowed to participate in women’s sports and use the designated women’s locker rooms and bathrooms.  I have empathy for individuals that struggle with their gender identity, but we shouldn’t disenfranchise an entire generation of young women that aspire to be champions to accommodate a few.  The NCAA has not settled this matter with a definitive policy. U of M should take the lead and craft their own policy. I will propose that the University of Michigan adopt a policy to protect Michigan women student athletes from biological males participating in their sports and competitions.

Freedom of Speech, Hate Speech and Antisemitism

What is your position on freedom of speech, hate speech and antisemitism at the University of Michigan?

I believe that the University of Michigan community needs to come together to foster an environment of peaceful exchange of ideas and free speech.  The protests and hate speech that the campus experienced over the last year that included antisemitic acts of intimidation, violence and breaking the law, have no place at the University of Michigan.  This world-renowned institution needs to be a beacon of light in the protection of First Amendment rights and in the promotion of the peaceful exchange of ideas.  I will propose a zero-tolerance policy at the University of Michigan for hate speech, violent protests, trespassing and violations of the student’s code of conduct.

Among the candidates running for two seats on the University of Michigan Board of Regents, two stand out: Republican CARL MEYERS and Democrat LARRY DEITCH.

Deitch, a Detroit lawyer, has been on the U-M board for three terms, and has established himself as a defender of the university’s excellence, of diversity and inclusion and holding the line on student costs. He’s thoughtful about tuition increases — often voting for them to counter disinvestment at the state level, but also sometimes opposing them to preserve affordability.

Meyers, a senior vice president at an investment firm, would add important financial knowledge and experience to the board. And he’s a graduate of the university’s Dearborn campus, which gives him an important understanding of the different needs and issues that exist away from Ann Arbor.

The two Republicans on the Board of Regents could use some company, and the GOP candidates running this year are worthy of joining them. Ron Weiser of Ann Arbor has run several times for this position, and he should get it this year. The real estate developer is the former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and former Republican National Committee finance chairman. Weiser, also the former U.S. ambassador to Slovakia, cares deeply about making the university a better place for students.

Also on the GOP ticket is Carl Meyers of Dearborn, a senior vice president of investments at Raymond James in Dearborn.

Carl Meyers, a Republican from Dearborn, is similarly running on a platform of affordability and fiscal restraint. As a financial adviser, Meyers brings a host of good ideas around reining in spending. He’d also like to see the university adopt caps on the number of out-of-state students at the Ann Arbor campus, to allow more Michigan students the opportunity to attend the university.
